Oh Dear God, Web2.0 is Scary

I don’t know what came into me, I wanted to see what’s new on a few Ajax homepages, like Pageflakes and stuff. And my, oh my, oh my, oh my!

Please, please tell me how is this:

Pageflakes - Web2.0

.. any different than this:

MSN - Microsoft Network

I can’t stand this anymore. I love the technology, I love the innovation, but I can’t stand all the discrimination, what the hell is the difference between Pageflakes and MSN?! Both are filled with absolutely useless content that looks hideous, or is it just a version bump? 1.0 to 2.0?!

I really like the fluffy colors, the big ass icons, the screencast craze, the make-your-own-blog-in-five-nanoseconds stuff, but please don’t call it something like: Blabr Flikuroo, it gets on my nervous, it’s too touchy feely.

What in the world happened to “regular” names? IBM, Sun, heck, even Microsoft is more of a real name for a company.

Phew, there you have it. Execute the brainfart, I had to get this off my chest.

Now back to my regular schedule.

Yahoo! Offers Toolbar on Linux

It’s as simple as this: Don’t offer me what I can’t buy.

Logging out of Yahoo! Mail I was offered a kind screen advertising Yahoo! Toolbar. I don’t know how difficult it is to check that I’m neither on Windows 98+, nor am I running IE 5.0+.

Yahoo! Toolbar Offer

So… Ajax, huh?

Yeah yeah, I know, Ajax and all that, but don’t you think this is too much?!

My Heritage

Otherwise, My Heritage is really cool.

Underestimating Your Readers

The thing is, you probably got lost a couple of times – and as I told you, that’s what usually happens, so don’t stress. So don’t feel bad if you have to reread each chapter more than once, or even ten times before you’re truly good to go.

This is a quote from the Sybex CCNA Study Guide by Todd Lammle. What I can’t really understand is who is this guy? and why is he underestimating his own readers?! I understand TCP/IP, subnetting and VLSM can be a little tricky, but not to an extent where I need the writer to “ease my pain”. Maybe Todd should take a look at this.

Writing rule of thumb: Encourage your readers, don’t put them down.

Company Coolness

When a company as cool as Google releases something as sucky as the Google Reader, everybody tries so damn hard to find a thousand excuses for why they messed up (or just praise the GLord).

And when a company as cool as Apple releases something as sucky as the iPod Nano, everybody grumps and complains and sues their ass, but they still find a thousand excuses for why they messed up (or just praise the iLord).

But when a company as sucky as Microsoft releases something as cool as WinFS, Aero and .NET, everybody rants about what a rip off it is, how stupid, evil and brain-damaged it is. Kill Microsoft!
